It has been a bit of a wacky weekend so far at Texas Motor Speedway. A lot of action and story lines to follow as we head into today’s race. Most popular of them all is do the Hendrick cars have it figured out all of the sudden? I’m not sure I will buy into it just yet. Lets get to some projections.
Kyle Busch – As of now this does not look to be the most attractive pick, but I will ride the momentum wave until it washes back out to sea. I like him today for a few reasons, he was pretty fast at the end of practice yesterday when the traction compound started working its way in and look at the weekend he has had. He is going for the Texas sweep and I would not be surprised if he doesn’t get it done today.
Kyle Larson – The last time Larson’s salary was down this low was at Atlanta and we saw what he did there. 54 fastest laps and 142 laps led. He didn’t pull out the win but he was a must have in your lineup because of dominator points. He has a bit of work to do coming from the 22nd starting position but this is the type of race that plays right into his favor. He was quick as well towards the end of practice and his teammate Kurt Busch looks really fast as well.
Kevin Harvick – Last week at Martinsville was a bit disappointment based on practice speeds compared to his race result. This week he rolls into Texas, a place he has dominated at in the past. In his previous 4 races here he has led over 28% of the laps, has 2 wins, and all 4 finishes have been inside the top 10. Also, if you look at the 5 races since the Daytona 500 Kevin has been really consistent with all finishes being inside the top 10. He is starting 23rd today and has a nice opportunity for position differential points. The Stewart-Haas camp has to break through soon to get a win and I think it could happen today.
Kurt Busch – This will probably be the chalkiest play on the slate today, but if this works out for Kurt, he will be in the winning lineup. He is starting way back in the 30th position today, and if you look at practice speeds you know he was one of the fastest cars yesterday. If he can keep his nose clean and come up to the front and get inside the top 5 today, the position differential points are going to be so big that it will make Kurt a must own.
Aric Almirola – I like this play today as a slight pivot off of Jimmie Johnson. With the assumption of Johnson going highly owned, I am ok with being in on Aric. He has shown he has one of the better SHR Ford Mustangs for today’s race. Like his teammate Kevin Harvick he has pulled out 5 straight top 10 finishes. I like this play today as a underdog for a top 5 finish today. I also think his salary is pretty favorable.
Paul Menard – I have been waiting to utilize Paul this season and I think today is the day. He has not posted a top 10 yet this season but I think that changes today. Greg Erwin has done a good job this weekend at getting a good setup underneath Menard. I also think that there may be quite a bit of attrition today with cars crashing and Menard could capitalize on that.
Ryan Preece – I was really impressed with Ryan’s race at Martinsville last week as he brought home a clean racecar and finished 16th. He was top 15 in practice speed yesterday in Happy Hour, and I like his chances today at Texas. He can provide some good position differential points and of the drivers around him in salary I think he has the best chance to do it.
